My experience at Pueblo Inglés was truly unforgettable. At first, the idea of engaging in one-on-one conversations with strangers, both Spanish speakers and fellow Anglos, was daunting. However, as the days went by, what once felt overwhelming quickly turned into an opportunity to forge deep and meaningful connections with people from different walks of life. I learned about the Spanish, Basc, and Catalonian cultures.
Each day at Pueblo Inglés was structured around a series of activities designed to immerse Spanish speakers in the English language. These included one-on-one conversations, group discussions, and various games that challenged us to think on our feet and communicate clearly. While some of the activities felt basic at times, they served as essential building blocks for the Spanish participants, allowing them to practice and improve their English in a supportive environment.
Despite the occasional simplicity of the activities, there was always a sense of camaraderie that made the experience enjoyable. We spent our days chatting, laughing, and learning from one another. One of the highlights was the midday break, where we would all gather by the pool. These moments were a perfect blend of relaxation and socialization, allowing us to unwind and bond over shared experiences. We created board games, help develop interview skills, talk about passion, and create a bow and arrow.
The evenings were another high point of the program. After a full day of activities, we would come together for lively social hours and parties. These gatherings were filled with music, dancing, and laughter, creating a vibrant atmosphere where language barriers seemed to disappear. It was during these times that I felt a genuine connection with both the Spanish participants and my fellow Anglos, as we shared stories and jokes while gazing at the stars.
The friendships I made, the cultural exchange I experienced, and the personal growth I underwent were all invaluable. Looking back, what stands out the most is the sense of community that developed over the course of the program. We arrived as strangers, but we left as friends, each of us enriched by the connections we had made and the memories we had created.
In the end, Pueblo Inglés wasn’t just about teaching English; it was about building bridges between cultures, fostering understanding, and creating lasting bonds that transcend language. It’s an experience I would recommend to anyone looking to immerse themselves in a new culture while making lifelong friends along the way. After the program I was able to go to Madrid City and Barcelona where I continued to meet the Spanish friends I made in the program.
