I found myself chatting with new friends before I knew it

I’m David from Cashel, Co. Tipperary in Ireland. I am the oldest in my family and have one sister.  When I attended the programme in 2024 I was 13 years old and just finished my first year in secondary school.

When I first signed up, I was really nervous, it was the first time I’d ever been away from home, and I was going on my own. I wondered how I’d cope without my family and friends around, and whether I’d make friends and enjoy the activities But from the first day, the people I met were friendly, welcoming and fun. Whether we were chilling before meals or doing learning activities in the afternoons,  I found myself chatting with new friends before I knew it.

It turned out to be the best experience of my life so far. I discovered that I can cope away from home, I made friends and I learned so much not just about other people, but about myself. I gained confidence, saw how friendly and open people can be when you step outside your comfort zone.

I honestly can’t wait to go back again. If you’re thinking about taking the plunge, I’d say: absolutely go for it. It’s scary at first, but so worth it. The memories you’ll make, the people you’ll meet, and the things you’ll try are all amazing.

Thanks to everyone who helped make it such a brilliant adventure,  I’ll be back!
