Neil Rohatgi

My first summer taught me humility. My second showed me the results of applying what I had learned.

My name is Neil Rohatgi, and I am 16 years old. I live near Boston and come from an Indian and Brazilian family. Traveling has introduced me to different cultures. Pueblo Inglés offered more than a trip. I formed friendships while helping Spanish teenagers gain confidence in English.

I have attended Pueblo Inglés Teens for two summers. Before my first year, I thought volunteering would be simple because I spoke English. I soon learned that speaking English and helping someone feel comfortable using it require different skills. A volunteer needs patience, energy, curiosity, and the ability to listen.

During my first program, I was still learning how to fulfill that role. I did not always bring the same energy to every activity, and I had room to improve. Instead of judging me, the staff and participants supported me. Their encouragement helped me ask better questions, include quieter people, and stay engaged.

I returned the next summer because I valued the welcoming community and wanted to apply what I had learned. I arrived with a clearer understanding of my role. I made a stronger effort to remember names, ask open-ended questions, listen without interrupting, and give people time to express themselves. I became more dependable and aware of others.

The activities made English practice feel natural. Through conversations, games, sports, and group activities, Spanish participants gained confidence while everyone formed friendships. The exchange worked in both directions. I helped others practice English, but they taught me about their lives, traditions, and communities.

My first summer taught me humility. My second showed me the results of applying what I had learned. I recommend Pueblo Inglés to teenagers who enjoy meeting new people, learning about other cultures, and accepting responsibility. After two summers, I left with stronger friendships, better communication skills, and a clearer understanding of what being a good volunteer requires.
